A weird-looking plant family that has gained the limelight for years, the cacti, continues to be a favorite of the rising enthusiasts. Many gardeners have discovered the extraordinary features of cacti. But what can really be interesting about these "Pricks"?
1. Weird is the new cool
Gone are the days that only plants with leaves and flowers are being collected. With over two thousand species, cacti are cool because they come in different forms and sizes. Some pups fit as a pendant, while there are desert-living ones that are as tall as a building. From the stone-like lithops to the fascinating mammillaria species, surely everybody can have a unique favorite!
And oh, did I mention that all cacti are capable of producing flowers? Well, they do! Given the necessary elements- soil, sunlight, and water, they will reward you with the most spectacular blooms in your garden.
2. They are newbie-friendly
Being drought-tolerant, cacti are very forgiving in terms of watering, making it an ideal friend to people who are just starting to love gardening; or to those who got busy in life that they forgot they have this little Spikey in the corner.
In addition, they are also very easy to propagate. Collecting the pups (or offsets) and putting them on the soil after it calloused could do the trick. You can also try grafting to species that are slow-growing or don't produce offsets. This process is commonly done with cultivar mutants such as the Moon Cactus for it to survive despite not having chlorophyll.
3. They help you get sweet dreams
Putting cacti on a shelf inside your room will add a more natural vibe to your place of rest. But did you know that cacti are great at reducing radiation and bacteria that are present in your room? When you sleep at night, these cute companies absorb the carbon dioxide and release fresh oxygen. I guess it's their way to say "sweet dreams."
There are a lot more fascinating things about cacti. And a lot more to discover when you own one. So who says that this Prick can't be loved and cared for, right?
